Making Your Own Horse
The Nez Perce Indians also created their own breed of horses called the Appaloosas. There are many different markings for these unusual horses and different names for each type of marking. If you could invent your own horse what would it be? Would it have short hair or long hair? Would it be short or tall?
Words to Know
A crossbreed is an animal that is the result of having a mom that is one kind of horse and a dad that is another—the foal will be a mix of the two! Except for the true original horse, Przewalski's Horse, all of our current breeds resulted from crossbreeding.

Shoo Fly Pie Kid Style
All you need to make shoo fly pie is a pre-made graham cracker crust, two pints of chocolate ice cream, one jar of caramel topping, and a few chocolate chips for your “flies.” To assemble your pie: thaw your ice cream slightly, spread it in the crust, add your jar of topping, sprinkle on a few flies, and freeze.

Look at the riddles below. Each animal has been crossed with another to create a compound word or phrase that means something completely different. Use the words around the edge of the page to make the answers. Careful—they will be silly!
Horse breeders do select certain horses so that they can choose what the new colt will be like. Will we need heavier, bigger horses for taller people? How about crossing a Clydesdale with a Percheron?
The United States recognizes horses by color as well as breed. We have pink Albinos, blue Grullos, and many shades of red. Do you think we will ever see the red and blue horse types combine to make a purple horse? Points are another word for the color of a horse's muzzle, tips of its ears, and the bottom of their legs. Can you imagine what a purple horse would look like with turquoise points, and maybe even wings or horns? This could be the horse of the future!

Mobile Horses
You can make your own carousel of horses by using a plastic plate with holes punched around the edges. Then tie several different colors of painted plastic ponies to the plate by tying each one on with yarn or ribbon. Have an adult help you tie one string up through the center and choose a place to hang it.
