aids

One way of communicating or “talking” to a horse is known as using aids. Some of the different methods that are used are speaking softly, positioning yourself in the saddle, and moving the reins from side to side.

ancestors

Your ancestors are the people who came before you in your family, like your parents, grandparents, and great grandparents. A horse's ancestor is the Eohippus.

bronco

A bronco, or bronc, is an undomesticated, or wild, horse. Bucking broncos can be seen at most rodeos, waiting for a cowboy who is brave enough to try to “bust” or ride them.

canter

One type of gait or step that a horse uses is called a canter. When a horse canters, it first lands on a back foot, then the two opposite front and back feet and then on its other front foot.

cold-blooded

A cold-blooded horse is considered to be cooler in nature than a warm-blooded or hot-blooded horse. These calmer horses are believed to have originated in the colder climates of the world.

communicate

One way to communicate with someone is to talk. Horses communicate through different sounds such as whinnies or neighs. Another way a horse communicates is by using body language.

crossbreed

A crossbreed is an animal that is the result of crossing two different breeds together. Except for the true original horse, Przewalski's Horse, all of our current breeds resulted from crossbreeding.

A domestic animal or horse is one that has been tamed, allowing it to be more comfortable and useful around people.

eohippus

Eohippus is believed to be the first real horse. Fossils from this very small skeleton were found over a hundred years ago and are believed to be around 50 million years old.

The word equestrian is used to describe all things related to the riding of a horse or it can be the term for the rider himself.

foal

A foal is another name for a baby horse. A foal can be a male or a female, but this name only applies as long as the horse is less than a year old.

founder

When a horse founders, it becomes very ill from some food that it should not have eaten. This condition can cause the horse to go lame or even die.

gallop

When a horse gallops, it is similar to a human running. Only one foot hits the ground at a time until all four feet have taken a turn. Galloping is the fastest gait for a horse.

habitat

A habitat is the natural surroundings where an animal lives or is usually found. A horse's natural habitat can be in the mountains or the prairies.

harness

A horse's harness is a combination of devices or objects that

are used to control the horse and connect it to the carriage, wagon, or plow that it is going to pull.

instincts

Instincts are a natural-born sense given to all kinds of animals. A horse's instincts may tell it to be afraid of certain noises or to seek cover in a storm.

jockey

A person who rides a horse during a race is called a jockey. Most jockeys are smaller in size to put less weight on the horse.

lasso

A lasso is a rope formed into a circle by tying a special knot in it. Cowboys use these lassos to catch both horses and cows. Another name for a lasso is a lariat.

mythological

If something is mythological, it is believed to be untrue, has not been proven to be true, or is something from a story. Two mythological types of horses are the unicorn and Pegasus.

passports

When you travel from country to country, most places require that you bring a special photo ID or identification card called a passport. When horses travel, they also use passports as well.

rodeo

One type of competition for cowboys and horses is called a rodeo. At a rodeo, you can see everything from bronc busting to barrel racing.

saddle

A saddle is a special seat designed to allow a rider to sit on the back of a horse. Saddles are made of leather and use cinches or girths to keep them from coming off the horse.

species

A species is a section or part of the divisions of the animal kingdom. Horses belong to the Equus caballus species.

stable

A stable is a type of house for a horse. A horse's stable usually contains the horse's food, water, bedding, and all the other things that are needed to care for the horse.

stallion

An adult male horse over the age of four years is called a stallion. In herds of wild horses, there is usually only one stallion who watches over the rest of the group.

superstition

A superstition is a belief that is unfounded. Many people believe it is unlucky to cross the path of a black cat or that hanging a horseshoe over their door will bring them luck.

trainer

A trainer is someone who trains a horse how to race, do tricks, or basic skills. It is a trainer's job to get the horse ready for all activities by teaching it what it needs to know.

tournament

A tournament is a type of contest or competition. Tournaments date all the way back to the times of the knights on horseback.

veterinarian

An animal doctor is called a veterinarian. They sometimes specialize in caring for small animals or big animals like horses. Veterinarians are one of the few types of doctors that still make house calls.

warm-blooded

Horses that are warm-blooded are usually faster and more active than their cold-blooded counterparts. There are more warm-blooded breeds than there are cold.
