In the Kitchen — Dans la cuisine

The kitchen is a favorite part of any house. Because food is such an important part of French culture, the kitchen receives a lot of attention. The French are known for their food because it tastes really good! They pay attention to everything, including the best ingredients and the freshest fruits and vegetables. In general, they want quality more than convenience.

Tools and Appliances — Outils et appareils ménagers

You can probably name all the things in your kitchen with your eyes closed. You know that the ice cream is in the freezer, and the cookies are in the cabinet. You may even know how to put a pizza in the oven or steam vegetables. You're probably feeling a little hungry right now. Better learn your kitchen words, and fast!

On the refrigerator write, <emphasis>le frigo</emphasis>, and on the oven, write, <emphasis>le four</emphasis>. Label as many things as you can. That way, every time you go into the kitchen, you'll practice your French!</p> </div> <div class="npsb"> <h2>Savory Salad</h2> <p>Alain wants to make <emphasis>une salade de fruits</emphasis>. And it can be in so many places — in the fridge, in the sink, in the oven, and so on.</p> <p>To ask “Where is it?” in French, you begin with the question word for “where,” <emphasis>où.</emphasis> Then you add some words you've seen before, <emphasis>il est</emphasis> (“it is”). But because this is a question, you have to invert the subject and the verb like we did in other chapters. The question for “Where is it?” becomes <emphasis>Où est-il?</emphasis></p> <p>To answer this question, you use <emphasis>Il est dans</emphasis>… (“it is in…). So if a French friend asks, <emphasis>Où est-il?</emphasis> you might answer, <emphasis>Il est dans le frigo</emphasis>.</p> <p>In the blanks, write six responses to the question <emphasis>Où estil?</emphasis> Use your new kitchen vocabulary for the answers.</p> <div class="npmo"> <img src="http://0.tqn.com/d/np/kids-french/p72-001.jpg"> </div> <p>Don't forget: You can take your “Where is it?” question, <emphasis>Où est-il?,</emphasis> and use it outside the kitchen, too!</p> <div class="npsb"> <h2>MISTAKES TO AVOID <emphasis>Fautes à éviter</emphasis></h2> <p>Conjugation is one of the hardest things in French. But you want to try to match your pronouns with your verbs whenever you can. If you incorrectly say tu suis instead of tu es, your French friends will understand you, but it might take a minute. They'll probably make a funny face, too!</p> </div> <!--/gc--> <div id="pagination"><ul><li class="prev"><a href="http://www.netplaces.com/kids-french/im-hungry-jai-faim/" title="I'm Hungry! — J'ai faim!">I'm Hungry! — J'ai faim!</a></li><li class="next"><a href="http://www.netplaces.com/kids-french/im-hungry-jai-faim/preparing-food-prparer-un-repas.htm" title="Preparing Food — Préparer un repas">Preparing Food — Préparer un repas</a> </li></ul></div></div> <div id="coda"> <div id="rel"><div class="n5">Related Articles</div><ul> <li><a href="http://www.netplaces.com/kids-french/im-hungry-jai-faim/in-the-kitchen-dans-la-cuisine.htm" zT="18/1YL/Zn"> In the Kitchen — Dans la cuisine - French for Kids </a></li> <li><a href="http://www.netplaces.com/kids-french/time-and-dates-lheure-et-les-dates/weather-le-temps.htm" zT="18/1YL/Zn"> Weather — Le temps - French for Kids </a></li> <li><a href="http://www.netplaces.com/kids-french/time-and-dates-lheure-et-les-dates/asking-about-time-demander-lheure.htm" zT="18/1YL/Zn"> Asking about Time — Demander l´heure - French for Kids </a></li> <li><a href="http://frenchfood.about.com/u/sty/explorefrenchfood/foodblogroll/Passions-to-Pastry.htm" zT="18/1YL/Zn"> Passions to Pastry - Reader Stories: Tell us about your French food bl... </a></li> <li><a href="http://frenchfood.about.com/cs/a.htm" zT="18/1YL/Zn"> French Food - Articles </a></li> </ul></div> <div id="sec"><div class="n5">Read More I'm Hungry! — J'ai faim!</div><ul><ul class="col1"><li class="btO">In the Kitchen — Dans la cuisine</li> <li ><a href="http://www.netplaces.com/kids-french/im-hungry-jai-faim/preparing-food-prparer-un-repas.htm">Preparing Food — Préparer un repas</a></li> <li ><a href="http://www.netplaces.com/kids-french/im-hungry-jai-faim/drinks-les-boissons.htm">Drinks — Les boissons</a></li> </ul><ul class="col2"><li ><a href="http://www.netplaces.com/kids-french/im-hungry-jai-faim/at-the-table-a-table.htm">At the Table — A table</a></li> <li ><a href="http://www.netplaces.com/kids-french/im-hungry-jai-faim/at-the-restaurant-au-restaurant.htm">At the Restaurant — Au restaurant</a></li> <li ><a href="http://www.netplaces.com/kids-french/im-hungry-jai-faim/yumyum-thats-good-miam-miam-cest-bon.htm">Yum,Yum!
