Expressing Feelings — Exprimer ses sentiments

Knowing how to say what you feel is very important in friendships. You need to be honest with your friends, because friendships are based on trust. You don't need to say a lot, but you do need to make an effort to say what you feel.

Your French friends feel the same things you do — happy, interested, and confident most of the time, sad and frustrated occasionally. But they explain how they feel in a way that's very different from how you express it. They use a sort of double pronoun. So instead of “I feel great!” your friends say something like, “I, me, feel great!”

Reflexive Pronouns — Pronoms réfléchis

You know when you go to a doctor for a checkup, sometimes he or she tests your reflexes. You get a little whack with a rubber hammer right below your kneecap, and your leg automatically kicks!

There are some verbs in French that have a reflex, too. They don't kick, but they do need a pronoun. In English, we call these verbs, “reflexive verbs,” but in French, they're called les verbes pronominaux. You can recognize them because they're always hooked up to a pronoun of some sort. The verb “to feel” is one of these verbs. In French, it's se sentir.

To understand how these verbs work, you begin by learning the reflexive pronouns in French. Here they are:

The French reflexive pronoun for “he/she/it” and “they” is the same, <emphasis>se</emphasis>. And the subject pronouns, <emphasis>nous</emphasis> and <emphasis>vous</emphasis>, are the same as the reflexive pronouns, <emphasis>nous</emphasis> and <emphasis>vous</emphasis>. Only the <emphasis>je</emphasis> and <emphasis>tu</emphasis> change to <emphasis>me</emphasis> and <emphasis>te</emphasis>.</p> <p>But that's the fun thing about learning a new language — it's full of surprises!</p> <h2>I Feel Good — <emphasis>Je me sens bien!</emphasis></h2> <p>To say how you feel in French, you need the verb <emphasis>se sentir</emphasis>. Here is the conjugation map with the reflexive pronouns:</p> <table frame="none" width="100%"> <title/> <tgroup cols="2"> <colspec align="left" colname="col1" colnum="1" colsep="0" colwidth="50%"/> <colspec align="left" colname="col2" colnum="2" colsep="0" colwidth="50%"/> <thead> <tr> <td><p><B>English</B></p></td> <td><p><B>French</B></p></td> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td><p>to feel</p></td> <td><p><emphasis>se sentir</emphasis></p></td> </tr> <tr> <td><p>I feel</p></td> <td><p><emphasis>je me sens</emphasis></p></td> </tr> <tr> <td><p>you feel</p></td> <td><p><emphasis>tu te sens</emphasis></p></td> </tr> <tr> <td><p>he/she/it feels</p></td> <td><p><emphasis>il/elle/il se sent</emphasis></p></td> </tr> <tr> <td><p>we feel</p></td> <td><p><emphasis>nous nous sentons</emphasis></p></td> </tr> <tr> <td><p>you feel</p></td> <td><p><emphasis>vous vous sentez</emphasis></p></td> </tr> <tr> <td><p>they feel</p></td> <td><p><emphasis>ils/elles se sentent</emphasis></p></td> </tr> </tbody> </tgroup> </table> <p>There are several common reflexive verbs in French. They include <emphasis>se laver</emphasis> (“to wash”), <emphasis>se lever</emphasis> (“to get up”), and <emphasis>se souvenir</emphasis> (“to remember”).</p> <p>They all follow the same pattern. The subject, the reflexive pronoun and verb all match.</p> <p>If, for example, you want to say “I feel good,” in French, you say, <emphasis>Je me sens bien</emphasis>. And if you say “They feel good,” you say, “<emphasis>Ils se sentent bien!</emphasis>”</p> <div class="npsb"> <h2>MISTAKES TO AVOID <emphasis>Fautes à éviter</emphasis></h2> <p>The reflexive pronouns are very important in French.
