The High Cost of Energy

If you knew how much energy it took to make things, would you try to use less stuff? You might be surprised to learn the high cost in energy of the things you use every day. These estimates might make you go green, and that's a good thing! Here are some things you should know.

  • A regular toilet uses 8 gallons of water every time you flush. It's estimated that every day Americans use 4.8 billion gallons of clean water just to flush their toilets. That's almost half the water we use indoors every day! If every home in America bought just one roll of 100 percent recycled paper towels, it would save more than a half million trees.

  • Every year we throw away 20 million tons of electronics, like old computers, radios, and CD players.

  • Recycling an aluminum can takes just 5 percent of the energy it takes to mine and refine that amount of new aluminum.

  • Do you feel like getting greener yet?
