Down-Home Cornbread

The mild, down-home taste of cornbread goes great with favorite comfort foods like chili and tomato soup.

INGREDIENTS | MAKES 16 PIECES

  • 3/4 cup cornmeal
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoon milk
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted
  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Spray an 8-inch square pan with cooking spray.

  2. In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, sugar, milk, baking powder, and salt.

  3. In another bowl, beat the egg. Add the water and melted butter to the egg, and mix well.

  4. Combine the two mixtures and blend together. Pour the cornbread batter into the prepared baking pan, using a rubber spatula to clear the batter from the bowl.

  5. Bake 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden brown.
