Most Wonderful White Trifle
Though a delicious dessert, here is a way to infuse some fresh fruit into the children without a ton of fat and sugar.
INGREDIENTS | SERVES 8–10
- 2 medium bananas (not too ripe), sliced
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 (4-ounce) package fat-free, sugar-free vanilla instant pudding
- 1 cup fat-free condensed milk
- 1 cup water
- 1 large container low-fat whipped topping
- 1 fat free (or low-fat) pound cake, sliced, and halved
- 1/2 pint fresh strawberries, sliced
Soak sliced bananas in lemon juice for several minutes.
In a mixing bowl, mix pudding, condensed milk, and water. Refrigerate the mixture until it is the texture of pudding.
When pudding mixture is stiff, fold in whipped topping and blend carefully.
Cut pound cake slices in half.
In a trifle bowl, layer the following: pound cake, pudding mixture, sliced strawberries and banana. Repeat.
Decorate the top of the trifle with strawberry and banana slices.
The Scoop on “Fat-Free” Products
Many years ago, fat free was the way to go, and the way you were told to eat. Why? It was determined that any food that contained fat had twice as many calories as that which contained carbohydrate or protein. While this is true, it has been found since that our calorie intake really didn’t drop—all of the fat-free products no longer contained unhealthy fat, but were substituted with large amounts of sugar. Many people seemed to feel that if the food were “fat free,” they could eat even more of it!
