Home Away from Home

Would you like to have a job that takes you hundreds of thousands of miles from home? One day in the future people may be living and working on the moon. Some scientists are talking about setting up a colony there; it would be like living in a very large space station!Maybe they will use it as a launch site for trips to Mars or a base for telescopes away from the light and radio waves coming from Earth. Or maybe they will use it as a tourist attraction. The astronauts say the Earth rises (sort of like our sunrises) are beautiful. If you don't like the long days of winter, a job on the far side of moon sure wouldn't be for you. Getting so many rays on the near side probably wouldn't be that much fun, either. Just imagine living in a place where the outside temperature varies at least 400 degrees F. It gets close to 300 degrees F. below zero. And you thought Antarctica was cold!Someone would have to keep reminding everyone to be sure and keep their space suits zipped up if they went outside. They probably would also have to remind them that there would be no running or jumping because of the thin atmosphere. If you're wondering if they would have to dodge a lot of meteorites, the scientists say there seems to be a lot fewer of them than there used to be.

JUST for FUN

Let's Go to the Movies

One way to take a trip into outer space without ever leaving your house is to watch a science fiction movie about aliens or traveling through the universe. All you need is a few friends or family members, some popcorn, something to drink, a comfy chair, and a good movie. How many famous movies about space can you name?
