Positions for Groups
While this isn't the book to go into detail about the practices of groups having sex, the Kama Sutra does include it. Many wealthy men of the time had several wives and some did engage in group sexual experiences. The Kama Sutra also describes situations in which several men met with one courtesan at the same time. Usually, though, one man entertained several women.
The practices were decidedly different then than they are now, although there are some couples and singles who often participate in group sexual experiences. Numerous old paintings and drawings depict one man with two or more women. “When a man enjoys two women at the same time, both of whom love him equally, it is called: The United Congress” (Part 2, Chapter 6, Sutra 40).
In a survey on tantra.com of 2,400 people, 36 percent of all respondents said they would like to have an experience of having sex with more than one person at a time.
The position known as “The Herd of Cows” is the classic multiwoman experience. “When a man enjoys many women all together, it is called: The Congress of the Herd of Cows” (Part 2, Chapter 6, Sutra 41). Although not a very flattering name, it does get the point across. “Many young men may enjoy a woman that may be married to one of them, either one after the other, or at the same time. Thus one of them holds her, another enjoys her, a third uses her mouth, a fourth holds her middle part, and in this way they go on enjoying her alternately” (Part 2, Chapter 6, Sutra 43).
Some promiscuous behavior may have gone on in the harem as well. “The same thing can be done when several men are sitting in the company of one courtesan, or when one courtesan is alone with many men. In the same way this can be done by the women of the king's harem when they accidentally get hold of a man” (Part 2, Chapter 6, Sutras 44–45). The Kama Sutra also suggests that groups can use water or pools for congress, many of which have names that are reminders of animals in herds.
