There were elements of mysticism throughout the major bodies of Jewish literature long before the emergence of Kabbalah in the late 1100s. Authors of Kabbalistic literature saw components of Kabbalah in these earlier works and referred back to them regularly, developing the themes of these earlier texts and incorporating them into Kabbalistic writings.
