Meditation has a long history in Judaism. Most of the meditative components of Judaism come from the Kabbalistic tradition, though we do find mention of it before the advent of Kabbalah. As in the case of the mystical tradition in Judaism, meditative techniques were kept among an elite minority until the emergence of Hasidism, which made these techniques more accessible to the masses. In the last twenty years, meditation has spread even more widely in Jewish circles of all denominations.
