Juice Fasting Danger Signs
Proponents of juice fasts claim the temporary side effects, which include headaches, tiredness, hypoglycemia, constipation, acne, increased body odor, and bad breath, are simply the price you have to pay to detoxify your body.
More serious side effects associated with fasting, such as fainting, dizziness, low blood pressure, heart arrhythmia, weight loss, hunger, vomiting, and kidney problems, are a signal that something is wrong. Another dangerous side effect of juice fasts is diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration and electrolyte loss.
Do not ignore these symptoms. Discontinue the juice fast immediately and see a qualified physician.
If they are continued for a long time, juice fasts can lead to serious nutritional deficiencies. Especially dangerous are protein and calcium deficiencies that can lead to conditions like muscle wasting, brittle hair and nails, osteoporosis, and frequent bone fractures.
Never use grapefruit juice during a juice fast if you're taking prescription drugs. Grapefruit contains a compound that can alter the way those drugs are metabolized by the body, either reducing or increasing their effects. Recent research has found that pomegranate juice may have similar results.
