Enhancing and Speeding the Effects of Juice Detox Diets
In addition to following a detox diet, you can also speed the process and its benefits in a number of ways, from massage and aerobic exercise to the use of colonics and enemas. While there are no medical studies proving these therapies actually enhance detoxing, many of them are perfectly healthy on their own.
Here are some of the more popular ways advocates recommend enhancing your juice detox diet:
Cleanse your lungs of the pounds of pollutants you inhale each day by doing yoga, aerobic exercise, and using machines that add moisture to your environment, including vaporizers, ultrasonic humidifiers, and dehumidifiers. Drinking teas like comfrey, horehound and lobelia, which have cleansing qualities, will also purify your lungs.
Cleanse your skin and increase circulation, which helps reduce toxins, by using a loofa. Use a natural sea-fiber brush as well as steam baths, which soften skin and stimulate circulation; hot baths with Epsom or Dead Sea salts; or stimulating herbs such as ginger, sage, or cayenne.
Flush your kidneys by drinking distilled water, which has no mineral or nutritional content.
Increase the flow of urine by using cleansing herbs high in vitamin C, such as juniper berries, parsley, and wild carrot, and juices made with watermelon rind, parsley, cranberry, cucumber, celery, aloe vera, wheatgrass, dandelion, strawberry, and asparagus.
Detox your liver, your body's most important detox organ, by purging it with juices made of carrot, beet, wheatgrass, lemon, grapefruit, apple, and spinach. Or use healing herbs in teas or hot and cold compresses. Good herbs to use include black cohosh, bitterroot, goldenseal, and mandrake. You can also add a teaspoon of olive oil to juices to stimulate the release of bile from the gall bladder.
Get a full body massage. This is one of the best ways to enhance detoxification because it mechanically stimulates the liver. Advocates claim that daily massages can make your juice detox diet twice as fast and effective.
Drink natural laxative and bulk drinks to maintain the movement of waste through the colon. These include juices made with flaxseed and psyllium seeds. Stimulating herbs include peppermint, rhubarb root, aloe, wheatgrass, and goldenseal.
Aerobic exercise is also important during juice detox diets because it increases respiration and sweating out of toxins. Running, jogging, walking, biking, swimming, and dancing are all good exercise options. But don't overdo it during detox diets. The point of aerobic exercise in this case is not to build strength, but to enhance detoxification.
