Kennedy hardly had the time to settle into the presidency before his first crisis emerged. The Bay of Pigs invasion was a debacle of Kennedy's own making, but it taught him the importance of carefully choosing his advisors and to rely on his gut rather than the opinions of others. At this early stage of his presidency, he was unsure of his own abilities and overwhelmed by the daunting task of preventing the spread of communism throughout the world.
