Kennedy was passionate about freedom, but he resisted advancing civil rights in the United States. Instead, he was preoccupied with keeping the world free from communism. He was realistic and knew he could never convert the Soviet Union to democracy, but he was optimistic that the United States and the Soviet Union could live together peacefully. This hope for peace nearly came to an end when a crisis over Berlin escalated to an almost uncontrollable level.
