John F. Kennedy's medical problems could have easily kept him out of the military, but he decided he wanted to serve his country regardless of his condition. Like many PT boat crewmen who were from wealthy families, Kennedy wanted to serve on board one of the fast, motorized boats stationed mainly in the South Pacific. While death was certainly a prospect he had envisioned, he never expected he would return home a hero.
