When putting together your resume you will give a lot of thought to its physical appearance, including font, layout, and paper. An increasing number of employers, though, don't want a hard copy of your resume. They will instead ask you to submit an electronic copy of it through an online form or via e-mail. While you will use all the bells and whistles provided by your word processing software to make a paper copy of your resume physically appealing, a copy that you will submit electronically will have to be plain and, yes, somewhat boring.
