The second half of the wedding ceremony that is performed under the chuppah is called nisuin in Hebrew and Aramaic. The nisuin happens automatically after the giving of the ring. While long ago this part of the ceremony was accomplished by building a house and living in it together, today we do the entire wedding ceremony under the chuppah, which stands in for the couple's home. The shevah berachot are a celebration of the nisuin and a completion of the marriage bond.
