The victory over the Greeks proved to be short-lived. Soon, the failures of the Hasmonean dynasty led to loss of power, as the Roman Empire assumed control over its new province of Judea. Unable to accept the rule of the pagans, the Jews staged several rebellions, which culminated in the Roman Jewish War and the destruction of the Second Temple.
