During the Diaspora, a few Jews continued to live in the Holy Land in small religious communities. But in the nineteenth century, the Zionist movement inspired thousands of Jews to return to the Promised Land and reclaim their land, which they saw as their birthright. With the creation of the State of Israel, the Diaspora as we know it came to an end as Jews from all over the world were reunited in their ancient homeland.
