By the time the Diaspora had begun, many Jews were already living throughout the Roman Empire. However, what had once been a mighty power was undergoing a decline. Ravaged by war and internal conflicts, by the fourth century the Roman Empire was no more—replaced by the Byzantine Empire and other Christian states of Western Europe. Suddenly, the Jewish people living in Europe found themselves a persecuted minority living under Christian rule.
