The First Temple Period began with Solomon's construction of the Temple in Jerusalem. It continued with the division of the kingdom of Israel into Israel and Judah, and finally ended with the destruction of the Temple by the Babylonians in 586 B.C.E. During this time of political and military strife, the prophets emerged to inspire and guide the Israelites toward the path of righteousness and exclusive devotion to God.
