The Israelites reached the threshold of the Promised Land in the thirteenth century B.C.E. Through battle and negotiation, they soon installed themselves in the land that had been promised to them by God. For the next 200 years, they would live as separate tribes, led by their tribal elders and the Judges, fighting to hold onto their homes in the struggle with the Canaanites and later the Philistines.
