The arrival of Alexander the Great and Greek culture (Hellenism) to Judah brought many changes—improvements as well as problems. Eventually, the tension between Greek and Jewish culture would lead to a revolt and a bloody war that would end with Jewish victory and the miracle of the burning oil in the Temple candelabra (menorah), celebrated by Jews to this day during the eight-day festival of Chanukah.
