After John baptized him, and the Father and the Holy Spirit proclaimed him, Jesus went into the surrounding wilderness to inaugurate his ministry by spending forty days and nights in prayer and fasting, and resisting the temptations of Satan. Following the baptism, John's Gospel segues directly to the calling of Jesus' first two disciples, and his ministry of healing and teaching the multitudes.
