Mysteries of the Kingdom
When Jesus' disciples asked him about why he spoke in parables, he replied, “It is given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom” but to those among the crowds gathering to hear him teach who reject him and his Kingdom, “it has not been given … I speak to them in parables because they do not see when seeing, and do not understand when hearing” (see Matthew 13:10–17, Mark 4:10–12, and Luke 8:9–10). This information is sandwiched between each of the evangelists' recitation of Jesus' Parable of the Sower and his explanation to the disciples of its meaning.
As with most events in his ministry, Jesus' parables are ordered in different sequences from one Gospel to the next, and some appear in some Gospels, or in only one, but not in all, as the following table illustrates.
