God on All Our Sides

Ronald Reagan characteristically said, “We shouldn't worry so much about whether God is on our side as whether we're on his.”Puritan preacher and Massachusetts Governor John Winthrop (of the “city on a hill” allusion made earlier) told his congregation (paraphrased): “if we deal falsely with our God in this undertaking, causing him to withdraw his present help from us, we shall become a story and a byword throughout the world; we shall open the mouths of enemies to speak evil of God's ways and all believers for God's sake; we shall bring shame on many worthy servants of God, and turn their prayers into curses on us, until we are consumed out of the good land that we are going to.”

The Old Testament aligns God on the side of victims of unrighteousness, violence, and injustice. He sides with the oppressed, those who mourn, and those who seek him (see Leviticus 25, 1 Kings 21, Isaiah 5:8, Jeremiah 7: 5–7, Isaiah 58: 4–12, Micah 6: 7–8). Jesus affirmed that perpetrators of injustice will be judged harshly (Matthew 24 and Mark 13).

God is on the side of those who take a stand for righteousness, Psalm 14:34 says. He's on the side of justice, Jeremiah says in an Old Testament prophecy about the Messiah, “the day is coming, says the Lord, when I will raise to David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth” (see Jeremiah 23:5).

The church in general says God is on the side of everyone on this planet, because everyone is his child, an object of the redemption Jesus obtained on the cross. God has invested in everyone in his world, and Christian politics is first about justice, a form of God's mercy to all people: “To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice” (see Proverbs 21:3).
