In the apostolic churches the woman at the well in the parable of the Good Samaritan is known as St. Photini, meaning “the enlightened one.” Tradition holds that she traveled to far parts of the Roman Empire to evangelize pagans. None of this is mentioned in the New Testament, and historical documentation is sparse, but Photini is representative of multitudes of early converts, largely unknown, whose names have been lost but who surely must have existed in order for the church to grow as quickly as it did.
