Evangelicalism has been a major force in American society since before the representatives of the thirteen original states declared themselves a nation at the Continental Congress in 1776. By that time, the First Great Awakening, or first nationwide religious revival, had passed its peak, but its effect was still being felt in the churches, mindsets, and lifestyles of many of the great number of rural Americans too isolated to be able to attend church regularly.
