Telephoning to and from Italy

From calling a hotel in Rome to calling a restaurant for a quiet table for two, this section will help you navigate the Italian telecommunications system.

Calling Italy from the United States and Canada

To place a call from the United States or Canada, first dial the United States international code 011, then dial Italy's country code 39, then dial the city code (06 for Rome, 055 for Florence), and finally dial the number, which can be six or seven digits. For example, if the Italian phone number in Rome is 55-55-55, you must dial the following: 011-39-06-55-55.

Calling Another Country from Italy

To place a call to another country from Italy, first dial the Europe long distance code 00, then the country code (1 for the United States and Canada), then the area code and number.

Placing a Call Within Italy

Italian phone numbers are comprised of an area code (this can be from two to four digits and begins with a zero) and the phone number. Cell phone area codes begin with the number 3, and area codes that begin with the number 8 are toll-free. To make a call from one area code to another, you must dial the full area code and number. To call within the same area code, you must dial the area code as well.

ALERT

Remember, Italy is six hours ahead of the United States Eastern Standard Time (EST). For example, at midnight in Boston, it is 6:00 A.M. in Rome.
