Renting a Car

Public transportation and taxis are readily available in all Italian cities, but you may want to rent a car to explore off the beaten path. Keep in mind that standard transmissions in cars are the norm in Italy. If you need a car with an automatic transmission, it is best to make a reservation before you leave for your trip.

ALERT

Italian law requires that non–European Union citizens possess an International Driving Permit (IDP). Car rental agencies are increasingly checking for the IDP when you pick up your rental car. You will need both the IDP and your current driver's license when traveling. You can apply for an IDP at your local American Automobile Association (AAA) or American Automobile Touring Alliance.
