Almonds are common ingredients in sweet Italian dishes. Enjoy this bread for breakfast or as a snack with tea.
2¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
½ cup unsalted butter
1 cup granulated sugar
¼ cup whole milk
1 tablespoon almond extract
½ cup chopped or slivered almonds
Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease and flour a loaf pan. Sift together the flour and baking powder. Cream together the butter and sugar. Beat the egg, then add the milk and almond extract.
Combine the flour, butter mixture, and egg mixture. Fold in the nuts. Pour into the greased loaf pan.
Bake for 40 to 45 minutes. Serve warm.
Just a Spoonful of Sugar
When grinding almonds for a sweet recipe, put a spoonful of sugar in with the almonds to be ground. This prevents the almonds from getting too oily and forming a paste while being processed. Just be sure not to add too much sugar, especially if there is other sugar in the recipe.
