Regular Affirmative Tu Commands

Read aloud each of the following examples.

Visita el parque nacional.

(Visit the national park.)

Ve la exposición en el Centro de Visitantes.

(See the exhibit in the Visitors' Center) Sube la montaña en tranvía.

(Go up the mountain in the tram.)

The usted and ustedes commands are based on the yo form of the simple present. Most of the irregular changes occur in this form, so they are incorporated into the commands. Remove the final -o from the yo conjugation and add the appropriate command ending as outlined in the following chart:

Regular Affirmative Usted and Ustedes Commands

Subject Pronoun

Visitar > e, en

Ver > a, an

usted

visite

vea

ustedes

visiten

vean

The vosotros commands are based on the infinitive. Just delete the final r and add d.

Regular Affirmative Vosotros Commands

Visitar

Ver

Subir

visitad

ved

subid

You can make nosotros commands by using vamos a + infinitive. To say “Let's take the train,” for example, you would say: Vamos a tomar el tren. The context will make it clear whether you are talking about the future or making a suggestion.

Affirmative Commands with Reflexive Verbs

When you make a tú, usted, or ustedes command with a reflexive verb, you attach the reflexive pronoun to the end of the command, making one word. When you do this, you generally have to add an accent mark to the vowel of the stressed syllable because you have changed the syllable count. The affirmative vosotros commands with reflexive verbs drop the -d of the command form when you add the pronoun -os. You will usually have to add an accent to the vosotros command forms as well. Look at these examples:

<tgroup cols="4"> <colspec colnum="1" colname="col1" colsep="0" rowsep="0" colwidth="25%" align="right"/> <colspec colnum="2" colname="col2" colsep="0" rowsep="0" colwidth="25%" align="right"/> <colspec colnum="3" colname="col3" colsep="0" rowsep="0" colwidth="25%" align="right"/> <colspec colnum="4" colname="col4" colsep="0" rowsep="0" colwidth="25%" align="right"/> <tbody> <tr> <td><p>levántate (tú)</p></td> <td><p>levántese (usted)</p></td> <td><p>levántense (ustedes)</p></td> <td><p>levantáos (vosotros)</p></td> </tr> <tr> <td><p>vstete (tú)</p></td> <td><p>vstase (usted)</p></td> <td><p>vstanse (ustedes)</p></td> <td><p>vestíos (vosotros)</p></td> </tr> </tbody> </tgroup> </table> <div class="npsb"> <h2></h2> <p>You can use subject pronouns or not with command forms. For example you can say ¡Levántate! or ¡Levántate tú! The command that includes the subject pronoun is a bit more emphatic, especially in the case of a reflexive verb.</p> </div> <p>Remember that command forms can be a bit abrupt in Spanish, so you might want to add <emphasis>por favor</emphasis> to commands to make them more polite: <emphasis>Vístete,</emphasis> <emphasis>por favor</emphasis> (Please get dressed).</p> <h2>Irregular Affirmative Commands</h2> <p>There are a number of irregular affirmative <emphasis>tú</emphasis> commands. For the most part, they are simply truncated forms of the infinitive, generally the first syllable. Look at the following list:</p> <p><emphasis>poner: pon</emphasis></p> <p><emphasis>salir: sal</emphasis></p> <p><emphasis>tener: ten</emphasis></p> <p><emphasis>venir: ven</emphasis></p> <p><emphasis>hacer: haz</emphasis></p> <p><emphasis>decir: di</emphasis></p> <p><emphasis>ir: ve</emphasis></p> <p><emphasis>ser: sé*</emphasis></p> <p>The <emphasis>tú</emphasis> command <emphasis>sé</emphasis> has an accent to differentiate it from its homonym <emphasis>se,</emphasis> which you've seen in impersonal expressions and as a reflexive pronoun.</p> <p>There are only three verbs with irregular <emphasis>usted</emphasis> and <emphasis>ustedes</emphasis> commands:<emphasis>ir, ser,</emphasis> and <emphasis>saber</emphasis>.</p> <itemizedlist spacing="compact" mark="bullet"> <li><p><emphasis>ir: vaya, vayan</emphasis></p></li> <li><p><emphasis>ser: sea, sean</emphasis></p></li> <li><p><emphasis>saber: sepa, sepan</emphasis></p></li> </ul> <p>Verbs that end in <emphasis>-car, -gar, -zar,</emphasis> and -<emphasis>ger</emphasis> will have slight spelling changes in the <emphasis>usted</emphasis> and <emphasis>ustedes</emphasis> commands. These changes are to preserve the proper pronunciation of the word. Look over the following examples:</p> <p><emphasis>sacar: saque, saquen</emphasis></p> <p><emphasis>pagar: pague, paguen</emphasis></p> <p><emphasis>comenzar: comience, comiencen</emphasis></p> <p><emphasis>recoger: recoja, recojan</emphasis></p> <bridgehead>Affirmative Usted and Ustedes</bridgehead> <div class="npmo"> <img src="http://0.tqn.com/d/np/intermediate-spanish/cd.jpg"> <div class="npcp"><p><emphasis>TRACK 51</emphasis></p></div> </div> <p><B>Commands</B> You might use these commands in a travel context, like the following examples. Listen to each example on Track 51 and repeat.</p> <p><emphasis>Saquen ustedes los boletos varios días antes de viajar.</emphasis></p> <p><B>(Get the tickets several days before traveling.)</B></p> <p><emphasis>Pague con tarjeta de crédito o en efectivo.</emphasis></p> <p><B>(Pay by credit card or with cash.)</B></p> <p><emphasis>Comience a prestar más atención al entrar al bosque.</emphasis></p> <p><B>(Start to pay more attention when you enter the forest.)</B></p> <p><emphasis>Recojan sus maletas en la terminal.</emphasis></p> <p><B>(Pick up your suitcases in the terminal.)</B></p> <h2>Practice: Affirmative Commands</h2> <p>You're ready to start telling people what to do now! Complete each command with the form indicated of the verb in parenthesis. Then check your answers in Appendix D.</p> <ul> <li><p><emphasis>Para tener más flexibilidad,</emphasis> __________ <emphasis>(alquilar, tú) un coche.</emphasis></p></li> <li><p>__________ commands by making up sentences to tell your friends what to do regarding their travel plans.</p> <!--/gc--> <div id="pagination"><ul><li class="prev"><a
