¿Dónde estuvo Jaime el sábado? (Where was Jaime on Saturday?)

El sábado Jaime estuvo en casa de su novia. (Jaime was at his girlfriend's house on Saturday.)

Alguien llamó por teléfono, ¿quién fue? (Someone called; who was it?)

Fue María quien llamó.

¿Se divirtieron ustedes en la fiesta de Ana? (Did you have a good time at Ana's party?)

Sí, nos divertimos mucho. Fue una fiesta muy animada. (Yes, we had a great time. It was a very lively party.)

¿A qué hora se durmieron los niños? (What time did the children go to sleep?)

Los niños se durmieron a las ocho. (The children went to sleep at eight.)

Imperfect or Preterite?

Era sábado y Alfredo quería dormir tarde. Él estaba muy cansado después de una semana de trabajo. Pero, a las ocho sonó el teléfono y Alfredo se despertó. Era su amigo, Juan, quien llamaba para invitar a Alfredo a jugar al fútbol. Alfredo no quiso decir que no, así que se levantó rápidamente, se bañó y se vistió. En quince minutos, cuando Juan llegó en el coche, Alberto estaba listo. Los chicos jugaron hasta el mediodía y se divirtieron mucho.

Translation: It was (set the scene) Saturday and Alfredo wanted (had the desire) to sleep late. He was very tired (state of being) after a week of work. But, at eight o'clock the phone rang (simple past action) and Alfredo woke up (simple past action). It was (description) his friend, Juan, who was calling (ongoing action in the past) to invite Alfredo to play soccer. Alfredo did not want to say no (chose not to say — simple past action), so he got up quickly, bathed, and got dressed (sequence of actions). In fifteen minutes, when Juan arrived (simple past action) with the car, Alberto was ready (state of being). The young men played (completed action) until noon and they enjoyed themselves (completed action) very much.

¿Te han llamado tus padres hoy? (Have your parents called you today?)

No, mis padres no me han llamado todavía. (No, my parents haven't called yet.)

¿Han leído tus amigos este libro? (Have your friends read this book?)

Sí, mis amigos han recomendado este libro. (Yes, my friends have recommended this book.)

¿Han comido ustedes en un restaurante español? (Have you eaten in a Spanish restaurant?)

No, todavía no hemos comido en un restaurante español, pero hemos comido en muchos restaurantes mexicanos. (No, we haven't yet eaten in a Spanish restaurant but we've eaten in a lot of Mexican restaurants.)
