Capítulo 4
When Jorge first came to New York City, he worked in a store. His job was to keep the store clean. At the store, he met new friends and they encouraged him to study English. Jorge went to school at night. At first he studied by himself but soon he became friends with Clara. They started studying together. A few months later, Jorge left his job. He went to work in an office. He worked in the mailroom. There, he made more friends. His new friends didn't speak Spanish and with their help, he expanded his vocabulary. Jorge and Clara still study together, and now he teaches herhe has learned.
Cuando Jorge llegó a Nueva York, trabajó en una tienda. Su trabajo era de man-tener la tienda limpia. En la tienda, conoció nuevos amigos y ellos le recomendaron que estudiara inglés. Jorge asistió a la escuela en la noche. Primero estudió solo pero pronto se hizo amigo de Clara. Ellos empezaron a estudiar juntos. Algunos meses después, Jorge dejó su trabajo. Fue a trabajar en una oficina. Allí conoció a más amigos. Sus amigos nuevos no hablaban español, y con su ayuda, aumentó su vocab-ulario. Jorge y Clara todavía estudian juntos, y ahora él le enseña a ella las palabras nuevas que ha aprendido.

Pablo is good (buen) student. He likes to read and he spends many (muchas) hours at the library. When he is not studying, he works at a local (local supermarket. He works about fifteen (quince) hours a week, usually in the evening and on Saturdays. He is also saving money to buy a car. He will be happy (contento) to get an old (viejo) car as long as the car gets him to school and work.
Can you believe the commercials you see on television? According to them, a fat person can become thin just by taking a pill for a few weeks, an ugly woman can become pretty/beautiful and an old person can become young again if they use a special skin cream. Buy the right product and you can get a really dirty bathroom completely clean in ten minutes. And if you buy a book on investing, you can make a million dollars in a few years and move from your small apartment in a dangerous area to a big, beautiful house in a safe neighborhood. It's complete craziness. I don't believe any of that.

Abruptly (adverb), Peter stopped the conversation. He said that he didn't want to talk about politics. He said that he was very angry (adjective). Carlos asked him why. Pasas cinco semáforos. Cuando llegues al sexto, doblas a la izquierda y continúas en ese camino. El camino tiene muchas curvas y le da la vuelta a un círculo. En el cír-culo verás el cartel para la carretera 206. Sigue al cartel. Quédate en 206 por unas diez millas y entonces vas a ver los carteles para el Parkway. Tomas el Parkway norte hacia la salida número 131. Desde la carretera podrás ver el anuncio para la tienda.
Cuando llegues a Sears, dobla a la derecha. ésa es la Avenida Jefferson. Es una calle de mucha actividad. Quédate en Jefferson hasta que llegues a Washington donde doblas a la derecha, quedándote en la misma Washington. Conduce por cinco cuadras hasta que llegues a la casa de los bomberos. La verás. Hay una bandera grande frente a la casa de los bomberos. Dobla a la izquierda y sigue derecho hasta el final de la calle.
Toma la última salida de la carretera. Cuando llegues al fondo de la loma, qué-dese a la derecha. Después de unas cuantas cuadras verás un restaurante. Manejas hasta la esquina y doblas a la izquierda. La casa está a media cuadra a la derecha.
Capítulo 19
Durante el invierno del año 2003, cayó muchísima nieve en los estados de Connecticut, New Jersey, New York y Pennsylvania, entre otros lugares. A veces nevó por dos o tres días seguidos. Como las autopistas estaban cubiertas de nieve y con hielo, no era recomendable salir en automóvil y los trabajadores tuvieron que quedarse en sus casas.
No fue una época o un tiempo desagradable. Las personas que se quedaron en sus hogares, salieron a esquiar, patinar o admirar la belleza natural de una tormenta de nieve. Todo estaba blanco y callado. Los árboles tenían en sus ramas una o dos pulgadas de nieve. Las calles estaban ocultadas con la nieve y pintadas de blanco. Hasta las noches no eran oscuras: la nieve servía como un espejo reflejando la luz de la luna.
Capítulo 20
Estimado Enrique:
¿Cómo estás? ¿Cómo está tu familia? Estoy muy bien. éste ha sido un buen año para mí. Me mudé de un apartamento pequeño en la ciudad a una casa de pueblo en los suburbios. El alquiler es mucho más pero tengo parqueo y hay una piscina. Como sabes, mi automóvil es viejo y no lo uso para el trabajo. Pero hay una estación de trenes cerca así que manejo hasta allá y dejo el automóvil en el parqueo.
¿Te has enterado? Voy a la Florida en enero. Por eso es que te escribo: espero verte. Llegaré el 10 de enero y me quedaré hasta el 25. Creo que eso nos da sufi-ciente tiempo para reunirnos.
