Gifts

There's no specific rule about how to go about thanking someone for a cash gift or a check. It's up to you as to whether or not you name the amount. If you feel more comfortable writing “your gift of $100” and then name the specific use you found for the money, then by all means, do so. Otherwise, “your generous gift of cash” or “your check” will suffice.

Gift Thank-You Note

(Date)

Dear Uncle Norman and Aunt Beth,

I just received your generous gift of a Palm Pilot. Your gift will help me keep track of all my commitments at college. I'm already entering items in the address book, so I'm well on my way to getting organized. Your gift matched my needs perfectly.

Your nephew,

Archie

Check Thank-You Note

(Date)

Dear Granddad Jones,

Thank you so much for your generous check. I deposited most of it in my college tuition fund; however, I did keep out enough to buy a backpack. (I wanted to get something to remind me of you every time I go to class.)

With love,

Amber

Address the recipient of a heartfelt, informal thank-you note as you would do so in person, such as “Gramma Pam,” “Nana,” or “Auntie Boo.”

A handwritten note is usually your best choice when sending a short thank-you card. However, if your handwriting skills leave something to be desired — or if a condition like carpal tunnel syndrome makes writing difficult — consider using a handwriting font.

Wedding Check Thank-You Note

(Date)

Dear Dennis and Ann,

Thank you for your generous check. We used the money to buy a set of prints that now hangs in our dining room. We'll give you a call next week so we can set up a time for you to visit — and take a look at the prints.

With love,

Nolan and Kristy

Wedding Gift Thank-You Note

(Date)

Dear Aunt Anna,

Thank you for the beautiful hand-embroidered pillowcases. We're using them in the guest bedroom. They look lovely! Knowing how much time and love went into making them makes them even more special.

Love,

Randy and Lara
