Checking References Letter
This letter is one that could be used to request information from an applicant's former employer or named references. Such letters should include the following:
Applicant name and position for which he or she is under consideration.
Information about the applicant's association with the reference.
Specific areas about which you'd like the reference information.
A deadline for the receipt of the requested information.
A thank-you for the reference giver's time and consideration.

We are in recent receipt of an application from Erin Indiana Klitzke for the position of professor and archaeology researcher at our university. It is our understanding that Ms. Klitzke works for your publication as a contributing editor.
We would appreciate any information you can provide regarding Ms. Klitzke's work habits — specifically her ability to meet deadlines, her attention to detail, and her attitude regarding her work. Please feel free to provide any other details about your association with Ms. Klitzke that you believe to be pertinent.
If possible, we need your reply to this request by the beginning of next month. We will respect your wishes to keep any information you provide confidential, if that's what you prefer.
