E-mail Cover Letter with Attachment

When you send an e-mail with an attachment, it's always a good idea to inform the recipient about what the attached file contains. Your approach will be slightly different depending on whether it's a business or personal communication.

Business

If you are sending a letter as an attachment, you don't need to reproduce the entire letter; you must simply convey the salient points of what it contains, so that the recipient has some idea about what he or she will find inside. If you're sending other types of documents, make sure you identify what the attached file is, so that the recipient knows what to expect when he or she opens the file.

Personal Correspondence

You can be more lax in your approach with personal correspondence, but it's still a good idea to give your friend an idea of what's inside. Even a quick note like “Hey, check out this picture; it's really funny!” will convey the necessary information.

If you're sending an e-mail that contains questionable material, such as adult jokes, it's a good idea to put a note in the subject line to warn people — so that the message doesn't get opened when the boss or small children are present.
