Blogs and Blogging

Some writers are beginning to use the innovations of the Internet to create new writing forms that incorporate sound files and other elements. Other writers simply use the Internet to publish their works, but use the technology in an innovative way to display the stories.

Of course, you don't need a specific purpose to incorporate elements of multimedia into your writing. One of the current trends on the Internet involves something known as Web logs — or “blogs.”

You can find links to blogs online at Blogger (www.blogger.com), a site started by Pyra Labs in August of 1999 and now owned by Google. Some bloggers use Blogger to power blogs they host on their personal domains. Blogger is also the home of a wide variety of blogs, where others like the winner of the 2007 Weblog Awards (Bloggies) for the best food Weblog — Help! I Have A Fire In My Kitchen — appear directly on that site at addresses prefaced by a part of the blog name, like http://firein mykitchen.blogspot.com/.

Using a blog, you can easily publish your writing on the Web, uploading your work using a simple template. The server will then do the rest of the work for you. Blogs are an easy-to-access publishing forum that can provide visitors with current and topical information.

Because it's informal, you can take whatever approach you like. Some people write full essays and upload them; others simply make short comments and observations, much like an online journal.
