Other Ideas That May Help

It's easy to overlook the obvious when you're under pressure. Facing a writing deadline can be a stressful time. Here are some other things you can do to help you get beyond writer's block:

  • Break up the writing assignment into a series of tasks; promise yourself some sort of reward each time you complete one.

  • Decide you need to get the job done, and just start typing.

  • Make sure you understand the assignment.

  • Talk to yourself. (Pretend you're verbally explaining your topic to somebody and write down what you say.)

  • Write the ending. (This way when you go back to the beginning and start writing your paper, the end really will be “in sight.”)

Probably the most important thing to remember when you encounter writer's block is that it isn't a fatal affliction. It's only a symptom that your mind is temporarily playing tricks on you, and for whatever reason is trying to interfere with your productivity. If one exercise you use to overcome your block doesn't work, try another. As long as you remain determined to get the (writing) job done and don't allow yourself to become overwhelmed by the task, you'll eventually determine your best writing process.

Writing is like any worthwhile endeavor: Persistence results in the reward of a job well done.
