Collective Works
Sometimes, articles or short stories are collected and published together in an anthology. In such a situation, many of the individual components of the collective work will still carry their own individual copyright, which is owned by the author; however, copyright also exists for the anthology. Basically, this means that no one else can compile the same works together and publish them. In most cases, unless the contract agreement specifies otherwise, the rights to the individual stories or articles are still retained by the original authors.
If you look at the beginning pages of an anthology of short stories, you will often see a page listing the individual copyright notices of each short story in the collection. This is done to maintain the copyright interest of the story's original copyright holder (usually the author of the story).
