A copyright is the law that covers only the form or manner in which ideas or information have been manifested, often referred to as the “form of material expression.” Copyright is not designed or intended to cover the actual idea, concept, fact, style, or technique which is exemplified in or represented by the work; it covers how that idea, concept, fact, style, or technique is expressed by the owner of the copyright. Copyright protection extends further than the written word. Songs can carry a copyright, as can artwork, movies, and television shows. In this chapter, however, you will read about copyright law as it pertains to your writing and that of others.
