You may have heard computer programmers saying, “Garbage in, garbage out,” refering to the fact that computers will only do what they are instructed to do. Programmers write instructions for computers in a given programming language, or code. The computer does not interpret what the programmer is trying to accomplish. Instead, it just follows the code.
Your credit is similar. If the inputs (information added to your credit reports) are garbage, then the output (your credit score, or any humanbased lending decisions) will also be garbage. Therefore, it is essential that your credit reports are completely accurate. While it's possible that a mistake will affect your credit favorably, it's much more likely that any mistake will hurt you.
