Employee Development

One of the best ways to keep your customers happy is to take good care of your employees first. Guide and encourage them and they will take care of your customers in return. Without satisfied customers to give you repeat business and spread the word about the excellent product or service you provide, you'll be missing the core of a successful business. Therefore, consider your employees your most valuable asset and you'll create a winwin situation for everyone.

Your associates want to enjoy coming to work each day. After all, a full-time employee spends more time at work than she does at home. She wants to have the tools to do a good job through the use of supplies, training, and skills — or a combination of all three. In return, she will expect you to let her know how she is doing and offer recognition for a job well done.

If you develop an employee with the use of training programs, performance evaluations, assessments, and career development, you will increase her chances for success. Your company will only be as successful as the people who work with you, so invest time and money in their careers — it will boost your bottom line in the long run.

Managers are usually so busy with day-to-day business operations that employee development may be pushed aside. As long as the work is getting done and there are no problems, people are taken for granted. It is worth the time and effort to implement an employee development program to increase employee satisfaction.

Some employees like to simply report to work, do a good job, and receive a check on payday. They are complacent to stay where they are, do the job they are paid to perform, and don't want any further responsibilities. There is nothing wrong with this. People have their own individual goals and motivators. Yet even workers who are content with what they are doing need development to keep their skills up to par with changes in the workforce and give them a sense of accomplishment and value. Employee development isn't limited to taking an employee to the next level, it's about feedback, encouragement, praise, teamwork, and letting a person know that they make a difference.
