Skin

The best way to avoid skin problems is to groom routinely and take care to prevent broken skin from dangers in paddocks or stalls or from poor-fitting equipment. Practicing a solid equine management program to reduce exposure to flies and other external pests and parasites also protects the skin.

The Skin's Job

The skin of the horse has all the same jobs as the skin of any animal:

  • Skin provides a barrier to foreign objects.

  • It synthesizes vitamins.

  • It provides insulation.

  • It serves as a huge sensory organ.

  • The Layers of the Skin

The skin has two main layers — the epidermis and the dermis — as well as a layer of fat just below its surface. Regular grooming helps the horse maintain a healthy hair coat by removing dirt and matted material and by increasing the production of sebum, an oily substance that helps the horse shed water and makes the coat shine.
