Lighting Options

Just as changing the lighting in your kitchen can transform the space, a fresh light fixture in the dining room can also help make the space more welcoming. A change in lighting doesn't have to cost you much, but it can dramatically transform the way a space feels.

Dual-Purpose Lighting

If you're planning to work and entertain in this space, you might want to invest in at least a few different types of lighting. A floor lamp can be just right for working on your laptop computer, especially if you have a cozy chair in the corner of the dining room to curl up in.

For above the table, there are benefits to a chandelier. Soft lighting is much better in this space than harsh overhead lights. If the light shines up toward the ceiling and then reflects back down on you and your guests, this will be more flattering than a straight-down beam.

As a general rule, you'll probably wind up centering your dining room table directly under your chandelier (or other hanging lighting fixture). In an attempt to redesign the room on a budget, try angling the table diagonally in the room, or pushing one side against the wall (you can pull it out when company comes) to create a different effect.

Typically, when you're hosting a formal or romantic dinner, you'll want mood lighting. You might install a lighting fixture with lights that can be dimmed. You may also want to incorporate decorative candleholders on the dining-room table and walls, if you choose to use candlelight.

The Cost of Lighting

When choosing lighting for your dining area, you have many options. A simple lighting fixture may cost under $50, while a fancy chandelier could cost anywhere from $100 to several thousand dollars. Chandeliers that accommodate 200 to 400 watts provide an abundance of overall illumination. Install the fixture 30″ above the table to allow for ample headroom when standing.

The diameter of the fixture should be 12″ less than the overall width of the table. Matching wall mounts or recessed lights can also be used to add accent and sparkle. If you purchase a chandelier with a dimmer switch, ask if it might “buzz.” This irritating sound can compromise the ambiance created by low lighting.

Easy Enhancements

You can easily enhance the appearance of many formal lighting fixtures by using flame-shaped bulbs in traditionally designed lighting fixtures or using globes or tubular bulbs in contemporary lighting fixtures. Clear bulbs are best with crystal, clear, or other transparent fixtures, and with glass shades. Frosted or coated bulbs work the best with opal, etched, and other translucent-glass shades or diffusers.

If you have artwork to showcase in your dining area, or you want to proudly display your fine china that is enclosed in a display case or positioned on a shelf, you can do so with accent lighting. Think in terms of a few meaningful objects that will create visual appeal. Even if you have many lovely items, too many packed together will detract from the overall effect.

Direct more intense light levels onto artwork or sculptures with directional wall, ceiling, or recessed fixtures. For help in choosing the appropriate lighting for your dining area, visit any lighting specialty store, hardware store, or home-improvement store.
