Alternative Storage Areas

Be creative about storage — there may be many places in your home where you can store seasonal items. Perhaps you have an empty crawlspace in your bedroom closet or a large guest bed that could accommodate some under-bed storage. A word of warning: when you're exploring alternative solutions, be extremely conscious of what you're storing and what type of special precautions you need to take to ensure the safety of what's being stored.

If you need to store clothing in a basement or attic where climate, mold, and moths may be a concern, be sure to use sturdy plastic bins instead of cardboard. Especially in a basement, you'll want to keep all items off the floor just in case a flood occurs.

Looking around your home, you'll probably find several ideal places for storing out-of-season clothing, linens, towels, bedding, and other items. For example, you might purchase an armoire for out-of-season items or even as an alternative to a closet. Wardrobes and armoires have been used as closets for centuries. Most high-end furniture stores sell various styles of armoires. You might also consider purchasing a chest that can act as a nightstand but also be used to store linens.
