General Bathroom Storage

When organizing your bathroom's cabinets, begin by taking everything out and dividing the contents into defined categories — prescription medications, nonprescription medications, first-aid supplies, hair-care products, makeup, toiletries, and so on. Take mental notes about what kind of organizational accessories may be useful.

The items that you use every day should be placed in a prominent, easily accessible location. If you have a cabinet under the sink, utilize this storage space for items that aren't used daily or that are too large to fit in a medicine cabinet or on the bathroom counter, such as cleaning supplies, extra toiletries, and your hair dryer.

After you've had a chance to bring some order to your bathroom, celebrate by taking a trip to a store that sells organizational tools. Treat yourself to at least one bathroom enhancement — be it small baskets for storing and grouping toiletries or a lovely hamper for your used towels and clothing. These small rewards can help you celebrate your accomplishment.

The Medicine Cabinet

If you want to purge but you're not sure where to begin, start with the medicine cabinet. Old prescription and over-the-counter drugs often stay in the medicine cabinet longer than they should because they were a costly investment. But after a certain time period has elapsed, drugs are no longer effective. Check the expiration dates on all medicines and immediately dispose of those that are past their prime.

After you've removed all outdated medicine, study the contents of your medicine cabinet. Purge any items that haven't been used for a year. When the cabinet is empty, clean the shelves and the interior, and then return everything in an easy-to-find order. Separate each family member's prescription medications and place them on separate shelves.

An artful display of toiletries.

Likewise, put all of the over-the-counter medications on a separate shelf. Group all similar items together so that they can be found quickly. There is nothing worse than scrounging for Advil when your head is pounding. Organizing your medicine cabinet is just one more way to care for yourself and your family.

Bulky Items

Your bathroom is not the best storage place for bulky items, such as tissues, toilet paper, diapers, and storage containers filled with extra bathroom items. All of these items can be stored at the bottom of your linen closet. By organizing your space efficiently, you may be able to buy larger quantities of certain items that you use frequently, saving yourself time, money, and trips to the store.
