Bath-Linen Organization

After you've had an opportunity to clean out cabinets, closets, and under the sink, think about smart ways to store your towels and washcloths. If they often end up on the floor, this might be because you haven't simplified storage enough. Some towel racks are a hassle — they aren't anchored properly in the wall, so they slip off if any family member grabs them roughly, or they require that you carefully fold the towels to hang them. If you know that you simply don't have the time or inclination to labor over your towel racks, consider a simpler approach.

For example, hooks are a great way to keep your towels. Instead of having to stop and fold your towels, you can simply drop them on the hooks. Hooks require no uniformity and no formality, yet a line of towels hanging on hooks can look reasonably tidy. Just make sure that you install enough hooks so that each family member can fit a towel on a hook without straining the anchors in the wall. Wet towels can be heavy, so you want to be sure to properly attach the hooks to the wall.

Hooks can help keep your towels orderly without the need to fold and tuck.

Another option with towels is to buy two cubes or bins. In one bin, you can neatly fold towels that haven't yet been used. This cube filled with unused towels can be as lovely as it is practical. The other cube could be used as a hamper for used towels. Especially if your towels are all the same color, this kind of touch can add aesthetic appeal to your bathroom, while increasing function.

You might need to label some hooks “Fresh towels” and others “Just used.” You can also assign a hook to each member of your household. You might even want to designate a “guest” hook. While you may feel comfortable using the same towel for a few days, you don't want to accidentally give a guest a towel that isn't fresh.

Built-in cubbies create storage and add ambience.
