Do You Need a Hand?

As you become more realistic with yourself about your skills and capacities, consider hiring a cleaning person. This hiring does not have to be a substantial investment. You could hire a cleaning person to come just once a month, for example, or every other week. Even if you are on a tight budget, a cleaning person might still be in your budget if you can find ways to reduce your overall spending.

The cost of hiring a professional cleaning person varies a great deal depending on where you live. In a rural area, where the cost of living is generally lower than a larger city, you can expect to pay less than in a major urban area.

Victoria Moran on hiring a cleaning person: “Getting this kind of help is not self-indulgence. It is time management … I look at having her clean my house the way I look at having the dentist clean my teeth: I do the daily stuff; she does the deep cleaning.”

Although everyone can develop cleaning skills and routines that work for them, certain situations may make hiring a cleaning person particularly useful. If you work from home, for example, you'll probably want your environment to be reasonably tidy. This will help you to better function as a professional.

If you consistently struggle to balance your desire for a clean home with your work deadlines, you might hire somebody to help with the cleaning details. This person can tackle the weightier chores such as mopping and scrubbing out the tub, while you and your family work together to manage the lighter daily maintenance work.

Although cleaning is often thought of as a chore, it can be simplified, and in some cases even enjoyed, if you find a deeper meaning in the work. The more you strategize about cleaning solutions that will work for you, the more likely you are to feel involved in and challenged by the process.

Cleaning does not just have to be about the final product, but the actual process can be good for you — cleansing your mind and giving you a break from the more abstract work that might be associated with your job. As Victoria Moran writes, “In the everyday maintenance of our homes, we have the option of experiencing peace, contentment, and that safe feeling of being part of something that is large and grand and good.”
